Search.com offers $35 billion for the acquisition of Google Chrome, surpassing the Perplexity AI bid.
[Search.com] bids $35 billion to acquire Google Chrome, surpassing Perplexity AI's offer. Supported by JPMorgan and a private equity consortium, Search.com has entered the competition to acquire Google Chrome with a reverse bid of $35 billion, exceeding Perplexity AI's previous bid of $34.5 billion. The $500 million price difference makes this high-stakes competition for the future of web browsing and AI search even more intense, as more challengers try to control the world's most used browser. "We believe this is both an offense and a defense," said Melissa Anderson, president of Public Good (the parent company of Search.com). "Acquiring Chrome has given us the scale to accelerate the promotion of our AI search platform - as well as a direct connection with users."
The U.S. Department of Justice sued Google in 2020, accusing it of illegally dominating the search and advertising markets. In April of this year, a federal court ruled that Google monopolized the digital advertising market. Chrome accounts for about 65% of global browser usage, but a report from the Wharton School estimates that Google's control over search traffic is close to 90% as of March 2025.
