The largest slum in Kenya has become a thriving Bitcoin economy.

Abstract generation in progress

About 200 residents in Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya, are starting to use Bitcoin for daily transactions, thanks to three years of local advocacy efforts. However, many participants are mainly interested in the growth potential of Bitcoin, making it difficult to build a cryptocurrency community.

AfriBit Africa, a fintech startup operating in Kenya since 2022, has provided grants for waste collectors to receive their wages in BTC. This has encouraged many local merchants and entrepreneurs to participate.

Although Bitcoin offers high returns and lower transaction fees compared to ATMs, only about 200 out of 250,000 to 1 million people in Kibera are using it. Transitioning from a speculative model to a real cryptocurrency community will require education, investment, and time.
