On July 26, 2025, the abbot of Shaolin Temple, Shi Yongxin, accompanied by 34 people including 7 lovers, 21 children, and 6 temple staff, entered Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 11:21 AM, intending to board Eastern Airlines flight MU583 to flee to Los Angeles, USA, but was intercepted by the relevant authorities.

Relevant departments have conducted investigations and assessments for two years. Shi Yongxin has 51 lovers and 174 non-marital children, of which 141 are born through surrogacy. Shi Yongxin started arranging for lovers in 2001, gradually taking control of overseas Shaolin Temple branches, some of which are co-led by several lovers. The Shaolin Temple branches in North London, UK; Berlin, Germany; New South Wales, Australia; New York, USA; and Canada are managed by 22 of Shi Yongxin's lovers, with Shi Yongxin promoting temple construction and cultural outreach as part of the business. The funds transferred to branches amount to $41.326 billion. This does not include over 40 subsidiaries of the Shaolin Temple abroad, which recruit disciples and membership fees from various countries, accept sponsorship from disciples, and include facilities such as four-star hotels and golf courses, with total assets amounting to $153.128 billion. Shi Yongxin has undisclosed assets of $21.311 billion in Cayman Islands and Swiss banks.
Shi Yongxin became aware of the investigation by the relevant authorities and attempted to flee with several people during a Buddhist exchange event on July 26, 2025. The relevant personnel have now been detained. The investigation is still ongoing.
