Do Kwon: From Stanford Genius to the Ups and Downs of an Encryption Fugitive
Do Kwon's Life: From Genius Teenager to Encryption Fugitive
Do Kwon was born in 1991 and is a Korean child prodigy. He graduated from Daewon Foreign Language High School in Seoul, and was admitted to Stanford University due to his outstanding academic performance and English proficiency.
During his university years, Do Kwon majored in computer science and was also a master of StarCraft. After graduating from Stanford in 2015, he worked briefly for 3 months at Apple and Microsoft before returning to his home country to start a business.
The first company founded by Do Kwon was Anyfi, which aims to achieve a "free interconnected world" through technology. During the operation of Anyfi, he was exposed to blockchain technology and began to conceive a decentralized payment system.
In 2018, Do Kwon teamed up with serial entrepreneur Daniel Shin to establish the Terra project, aiming to create an algorithmic stablecoin ecosystem. Terra quickly attracted investments from well-known exchanges such as Binance and shone brightly during the bull market in 2021, at one point becoming the second-largest public chain project by market capitalization.
However, in May 2022, Terra's algorithmic stablecoin UST suddenly lost its peg to the US dollar, triggering a massive run on the bank. In just a few days, the Terra ecosystem collapsed, and over $40 billion in market value evaporated. This event not only dealt a heavy blow to the encryption market but also transformed Do Kwon from a genius entrepreneur into a target of public criticism.
After the collapse, the South Korean prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Do Kwon, accusing him of violating capital market laws. Do Kwon chose to leave Singapore and began his life in exile. As of now, his exact whereabouts remain unknown, but he insists that he has not fled and is willing to cooperate with the investigation.
This former genius teenager has now become one of the most controversial figures in the encryption industry. His life trajectory seems like a roller coaster ride from heaven to hell.
