Elon Musk questions whether quantum computers can crack Bitcoin?
Elon Musk asked Grok (AI of xAI) whether quantum computers could breakdown SHA-256 – the security algorithm of Bitcoin – or not.
Grok cites NIST, IBM, and experts stating that the likelihood is nearly 0% in 5 years and below 10% by 2035. The reason is that millions of error-corrected qubits are needed, while current quantum computers only have 100–200 noisy qubits.
Grover's algorithm can shorten the breakdown of SHA-256, but it still requires at least 2,000 logical qubits with extremely low error – something that is not feasible today.
Despite the progress made by Google's Willow chip (2024), experts at the NIST 2025 conference still believe that Bitcoin's security will remain safe for at least the next 10 years.
